How to Calculate Salaries Tax in Hong Kong?
Calculating your salaries tax in Hong Kong is based on a simple formula: start with your total annual income (salary, bonuses, allowances, benefits), then subtract deductions such as Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) contributions, approved donations, self‑education expenses, rent, or home loan interest. After that, subtract the eligible personal allowances (e.g. basic allowance, married allowance, child allowance). What remains is called your Net Chargeable Income.
The government will apply progressive tax rates (2% to 17%) to your Net Chargeable Income and also calculate a flat standard rate (15% up to HK$5 million, then 16% above), based on your net income before allowances. The lower of the two amounts is your final tax payable. This ensures taxpayers get the most favourable result.
Our Hong Kong Salaries Tax Calculator saves you from doing all of this manually. Just enter your annual income, MPF contributions, allowances, and deductions — then click “Calculate Tax.” The calculator will instantly show your estimated tax payable, and even test whether joint or separate assessment works better for married taxpayers.
