Understanding Long Service Payment in Hong Kong

Long service payment is a statutory benefit in Hong Kong designed to recognize the loyalty and long-term contribution of employees who have served the same employer for an extended period.

Unlike severance pay, which is triggered by redundancy or layoff, long service payment is generally payable when an employee is dismissed (other than for serious misconduct), retires at the normal retirement age, dies, or resigns on grounds of ill health or old age.

How is Long Service Payment Calculated?

Monthly-rated employees:
The payment is calculated as two-thirds of the employee’s last full month’s wages, subject to a maximum wage of HK$22,500 per month (so the maximum amount used in the formula is HK$15,000).

Daily-rated or piece-rated employees:
The calculation is based on 18 days’ average wages from the last 30 working days, or two-thirds of HK$22,500 (i.e. HK$15,000), whichever is less.

Years of service:
Both completed years and any incomplete year (calculated on a pro-rata basis) are counted in the calculation.

Maximum payment:
The statutory maximum long service payment is HK$390,000.
